Rebecca Gratz, the Philadelphia philanthropist and educator, sits facing the camera in this three-quarter-length studio portrait by Broadbent & Co. of Chestnut Street. Born in 1781, she spent much of her life in charity and education, founding the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society and a Sunday school for Jewish children in her city. The photograph dates from between 1853 and 1869, near the end of her life, and it was later included in the Library of Congress exhibition *From Haven to Home*, which marked 350 years of Jewish life in America.
