Mary Ellen Hockett Flanner sits full-length for this portrait, seated and facing the camera with a steady, direct gaze. She was the mother of Janet Flanner, the Indiana-born writer who later reported from Paris for *The New Yorker* under the pen name Genêt. The photograph dates to about 1900, when Janet was a girl in Indianapolis, and it was later reproduced in Brenda Wineapple's 1989 biography *Genêt*. Its formal pose and close framing reflect the conventions of studio portraiture of the period.
