Ethel Barrymore sits facing the camera in this three-quarter-length studio portrait, made around 1901 while she was building her reputation on the New York stage. The print was made by Burr McIntosh, a New York photographer who had worked as an actor before turning to portraiture, and it was deposited with the U.S. Copyright Office, which protected studio images from unauthorized copying. Barrymore, a member of the theatrical Barrymore family, later became one of the leading American actresses of her era. The picture shows how stage performers were presented to the public in the early 1900s.
