Shown seated and turned toward the camera in a three-quarter length pose, Frank George Carpenter appears in this portrait from about 1922, when he was in his late sixties. Carpenter built a long career as a newspaper correspondent and travel writer, sending syndicated letters from many countries and producing a series of geography readers for young people. The U.S. Copyright Office notation in the record indicates the photograph was registered for publication, which fits a period when writers' portraits often ran alongside their work.
