Wades in Water, a Piegan man, sits full length on the floor facing the camera, with his hair in braids and his beaded buckskin shirt and leggings trimmed with ermine tails. Edward S. Curtis made the portrait around 1910 for his large survey of Native American peoples, and the record notes its registration with the U.S. Copyright Office. Curtis often posed sitters in regalia so that clothing and adornment could be documented in detail. The Piegan, part of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana and Alberta, are known for finely worked beadwork, which makes these garments worth a close look.
