Belle da Costa Greene sits in this full-length portrait turned toward the right, a pose that suits a woman whose public career centered on books and manuscripts. She became librarian to financier J. P. Morgan in 1905 and later directed the Morgan Library, which opened its doors to the public in 1924. Greene was known for her polished style and her expertise in rare books, and she kept much of her family background private, presenting herself as having Portuguese ancestry. The photograph offers a useful glimpse of how she chose to present herself during the years she helped shape the Morgan's collections.
