Shown seated and turned to the right, Benjamin Franklin appears at full length in this engraving, published around 1863 by Johnson, Fry & Co. after a painting by Alonzo Chappel. Chappel, a mid-nineteenth-century American painter, produced many images of historical figures for popular histories and illustrated books, and the print reflects that era's appetite for dignified portraits of the Founders. Franklin, a printer, writer and diplomat who represented the American colonies in Paris during the Revolution, was a natural subject for such treatment.
