Cornelius Vanderbilt, the shipping and railroad magnate who built one of the largest fortunes in nineteenth-century America, appears here in a three-quarter length pose, standing and turned toward the right. As an engraving, the image would have been reproduced for wide circulation in its era, when printed likenesses of prominent businessmen appeared in newspapers, books and parlor prints. The caption card records no date, so the exact year of production is uncertain, but Vanderbilt's career spanned from steamboats on New York waters in the 1810s to the New York Central railroad in the 1860s and 1870s, and portraits of him were common throughout that period.
