Taken on April 6, 1918, this Bain News Service portrait shows Thomas Hitchcock Jr. in uniform, standing at three-quarter length and facing the camera squarely. Hitchcock was a well-known polo player from a prominent family who served as a pilot in the First World War, and in 1918 the United States was only months into its direct involvement in that war, when newspapers regularly printed portraits of men in service. Bain News Service, a New York news photo agency, supplied many such images, and its George Grantham Bain Collection now preserves a broad record of the decade.
