Orville Wright stands at three-quarter length, facing the camera, in this March 1909 portrait from the Alfred Hildebrandt Collection. By then he and his brother Wilbur had become famous for their powered airplane flights, and Orville was still recovering from injuries he suffered in a crash at Fort Myer, Virginia, in 1908. The record notes that the print may be autographed, which would have made such photographs popular keepsakes among admirers of early aviation. Its formal pose reflects the conventions of portrait photography at the time, when public figures were often shown as composed and dignified.
