Few pictures in this gallery can claim a subject who broke as much ground as Helen Hamilton Gardener, the first woman to serve as a United States Civil Service Commissioner. Known in her time as a novelist, lecturer and advocate for women's rights, she held a federal post that few women had reached. This three-quarter length portrait shows her standing and facing the camera, and the print is autographed to Helen Gardener Crane, the name under which it was signed. Studio portraits like this one, made between 1915 and 1925, were often used to present public figures and their causes to a wider audience.
