Caleb Cushing appears here full length, standing with his arms folded and turned toward the left of the frame. Cushing (1800-1879) was a Massachusetts lawyer and congressman who negotiated the Treaty of Wanghia with China in 1844 and later served as U.S. Attorney General under Franklin Pierce. The caption card gives no date, so the portrait is best read as a record of a public man at a busy point in a long career. Full-length portraits like this were a common way for nineteenth-century officeholders to present authority in a single figure.
