Standing full length and turned toward the right, Charles Evans Hughes poses beside his wife, Antoinette Carter Hughes, in a studio portrait dated to about 1916. That was the year Hughes left the U.S. Supreme Court to become the Republican presidential nominee, and he lost narrowly to Woodrow Wilson that fall, so the picture catches him at a turning point in his public life. The print carries a copyright registration in the name of G. V. Buck, a Washington, D.C., photographer, which reflects how widely studio portraits of prominent officials were sold and reproduced at the time. The catalog data is unverified, so the exact sitting date remains uncertain.
