Here the photographer himself is the subject: Erwin E. Smith sits on horseback, facing right, in a full-length portrait that his own caption describes as "sitting easy in saddle." Smith, who worked from Bonham, Texas, registered the image for copyright in 1908, the same period when he was building a body of work on cowboys and ranch life. Photographing himself in the saddle, he presents the working horseman he was documenting and blurs the line between the photographer and his subject. Smith later became known for his images of Texas ranch country and for his film work, and this portrait shows the early stage of that career.
