Seated and turned to the right, with his hand raised to his chin, James G. Blaine appears in this half-length portrait as a thoughtful statesman rather than a stiff official. Blaine had served as Speaker of the House and as Secretary of State, and he was the Republican nominee for president in 1884, losing narrowly to Grover Cleveland. The print carries the imprint of Napoleon Sarony, the New York studio photographer who made many portraits of prominent figures of the period. Its copyright notation points to a registration around June 1892, roughly a year before Blaine died in 1893.
