Four large tipis stand at the edge of a wooded area at Big Timbers, a cottonwood grove along the Arkansas River that was a well-known gathering place for Cheyenne people, while two figures face the camera just left of center. At the right, a frame holds what the record describes as pemmican or hides. The record credits Solomon Carvalho, photographer on John C. Frémont's 1853 expedition, though the attribution is probable rather than certain. Surviving daguerreotypes of Plains camps from this period are rare.

| Notes | Identified as a daguerreotype by Solomon Carvalho of a Plains Indian village in Kansas Territory taken during the Frïemont Expedition in 1853, probably copied by the Mathew Brady studio. This identification was based on the fact that the daguerreotype was acquired by the Library with other daguerreotypes from the Brady studio and that Brady was hired by Frïemont to copy Carvalho's daguerreotypes on wet plate negatives.
