Harlan, the seat of Shelby County in western Iowa, is the setting for this c1910 print of High Bridge, a railroad span that carried the Chicago Great Western Railroad across the open country near town. The line, which its operators also called the "Maple Leaf Route," ran through the state's farmland and linked small Iowa communities to larger markets, so a bridge like this one was a visible sign of the rail network that shaped rural life in the early twentieth century. Railroad photographs of this period often documented such structures as engineering works, and the picture is worth a closer look for the trestle design and the flat landscape around it.
