A pencil sketch of a railroad bridge over the Monocacy River near Frederick, Maryland, shows the structure wrecked, with the words "Dead horses" lettered beneath the scene, a grim detail that points to the aftermath of fighting. The drawing is dated July 9, 1864, the day of the Battle of Monocacy, when a smaller Union force under Lew Wallace tried to slow Confederate troops under Jubal Early as they marched toward Washington. The delay at this river crossing gave the capital's defenses time to prepare.
