Few capitals were as short-lived as Columbia, a small town on the Brazos River where the Republic of Texas first set up its government in 1836. The building named here is tied to that brief seat of power, when the new republic's congress met in the months after the victory at San Jacinto. The government moved to Houston before the year ended, and the caption card's 1836 notation places the subject in that unsettled season. The print comes from the Wittemann Collection, though the card gives no date for the photograph itself.
