The caption names the house as Itō's, most likely referring to Itō Hirobumi, Japan's Resident-General in Korea from 1906 to 1909, a post that marked the growth of Japanese control over the peninsula. Few other views on this board tie a Seoul building to a figure so central to that period. The print comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled by American travel writers who reported on Korea and other parts of Asia for readers at home. Its date is given only as between 1890 and 1923, so it is best read as a view of Seoul during the late Joseon era and the early colonial years.
