A thatched hut of straw and mud, the kind of low dwelling common in the countryside around Seoul, serves as the setting for this stereograph of a family at home. The card was issued by the Keystone View Company under the copyright of B.L. Singley, a firm that sold stereo views of distant places to American parlors in the early twentieth century. Paired images like this produced a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope, giving Western audiences a close look at daily life in Korea, which was then the Korean Empire, less than a decade before Japan annexed it in 1910. The caption's description of the family is unverified, so the scene is best read as a commercial view of rural domestic life, shaped by what its buyers expected to see.
