Frances F. Palmer's hand is visible throughout this lithograph of a ruffed grouse hen tending her chicks, one of the many bird and animal scenes Currier & Ives issued in the 1860s. Palmer, who served as the firm's principal in-house designer for decades, drew on close observation of rural and woodland life to make these domestic scenes legible to a broad public. The print's cheerful title, "The happy family," reflects the sentimental taste of the period, when middle-class American households hung such images on parlor walls. Its presence in the Library of Congress collection makes it a useful record of how popular printmakers portrayed wildlife and home life just after the Civil War.
