Plate IV of *The Progress of Intemperance* turns from the tavern to the household, showing the drinker's ruin reaching his wife and children. Nathaniel Currier published the series from New York around 1841, a time when the temperance movement was gaining strength, and the Washingtonian pledge movement that began in Baltimore in 1840 was drawing large crowds of reformed drinkers. Currier's inexpensive lithographs were meant to be read as moral lessons, so the scene's crowded misery works as a sermon as much as a picture. It is worth viewing alongside the earlier plates to see how the story unfolds.
