Currier & Ives, the New York firm famous for cheap hand-colored lithographs, published this print around 1863, during the Civil War years. Its title, "An increase of family," is a comic phrase that makes the picture's joke at the expense of the household rather than any battlefield. The record offers little else about its figures or scene, so the print is best read as part of the firm's large output of domestic humor, which sold widely to middle-class buyers who enjoyed its affectionate teasing of everyday life. catalog raisonné entries like this one, from the 1983 Gale Research volume, help historians date and trace such work.
