The subject is Lincoln's family during the first year of his presidency, shown in a mezzotint engraved by J.C. Buttre after a painting by Francis B. Carpenter. Carpenter spent several months at the White House in 1864 and came to know the Lincolns well, which gives his work a basis in close observation. Mezzotint was prized in the 1870s for its soft, rich tones, and engravings like this one reached a public eager for images of the Lincoln household, especially after the president's death. The c1873 date refers to the print's publication, not the 1861 scene, and some details of the record remain unverified.
