A family group of Peulands, children and adults together, posed at Scaly Gap in the mountains of western North Carolina. The caption card carries no date, but the photograph is most likely from the fall of 1909, when Lewis Hine, working for the National Child Labor Committee, was documenting rural life, labor, and childhood across the southern Appalachians. The caption's phrase "Mountain-Whites" was a common label of the day that reflects outside observers' assumptions about mountain residents more than how those residents described themselves, so the picture is worth reading with that context in mind.
