Few pictures from the spring of 1912 carry the weight of this family group, a print showing Titanic survivors gathered together after the liner's loss. The Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic in April 1912 on her maiden voyage and sank within hours, taking more than 1,500 lives. Photographs like this one came from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographers supplied images to newspapers eager for scenes of the disaster and its aftermath, so the picture reflects how quickly the story reached the public.
