A lithograph from 1865 gathers Jefferson Davis, Benedict Arnold and the Devil into one family portrait under the title "A proper family re-union." The joke depends on the two prisons named in its subjects, Andersonville in Georgia and Libby in Richmond, where Union captives endured brutal conditions and many died. By linking the Confederate president to the country's most notorious traitor and to these prisons, the cartoon casts the defeated South's leaders as kin to treason and cruelty. Its late-1865 publication, after the war's end, shows how sharply Northern audiences still judged the former Confederacy.
