Among Lewis Hine's 1908 glassworks pictures, this night view stands out for its dark plant and the boys who work in its glow. Hine traveled that year for the National Child Labor Committee to document young workers in glass houses, where furnaces ran around the clock and boys often carried hot pieces to annealing ovens. The caption card records no city, so the exact factory is unidentified, and the attribution to Hine rests on the album in which the print was kept. Night shifts like this one drew attention from reformers pressing for limits on child labor in the period.
