Richard Wagner died in Venice on February 13, 1883, and this image records the procession that followed his death, with a crowd gathered around a hearse. Wagner, the German composer behind the Ring cycle and Parsifal, had spent his last years at the Palazzo Vendramin, and his body was carried through the city before the journey north to Bayreuth, where he was buried at his home, Wahnfried. Funeral scenes like this one were a common way for nineteenth-century newspapers and illustrators to mark the death of a public figure, and the dense, watchful crowd suggests how much attention his passing drew.
