A lantern slide of a San Francisco Chinatown street scene, dated to about 1896, is the work of Arnold Genthe, the German-born photographer who spent much of his early career documenting the neighborhood. Lantern slides were glass positives projected onto screens for audiences in lecture halls and parlors, so this image was meant to be seen by a crowd rather than held in the hand. Genthe later became known for his portraits and his photographs of the 1906 earthquake, but his Chinatown work is valued for its record of daily street life in the 1890s.
