A woman identified as the wife of Penri II, a chief of the Ainu, stands beside Arnold Genthe in this 1908 gelatin silver print. Genthe, a German-born photographer who worked in San Francisco and New York, traveled in Japan in the late 1900s and turned his camera on the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido and the northern islands. Portraits like this one were made at a time when Western photographers often framed Ainu subjects as exotic types, so the picture's record of a named family and a leader's household is worth noticing.
