A lantern slide made around 1896 by Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who later became famous for his portraits and images of San Francisco's Chinatown, offers an early glimpse of the neighborhood before its 1906 earthquake and fire. Lantern slides were glass positives projected onto screens for audiences, so this image was likely meant to be seen by a crowd at a lecture or show rather than held in the hand. Genthe spent much of his time photographing Chinatown's streets and residents, and his work helped shape how outsiders pictured the district. The record gives few details about the exact street or people shown, so the scene is best read as a document of everyday neighborhood life in the 1890s.
