Angling for trout was a favorite American sporting subject by 1870, and this lithograph from John Walsh & Co. of New York treats the stream as a place of leisure for the growing middle class. Lithography let New York publishers produce affordable images in quantity, and the firm's copyright entry under the federal act that year shows it was registered for sale. The pastime itself drew on a long tradition that went back to Izaak Walton's *The Compleat Angler* (1653), and by the 1870s it had become a fashionable outdoor pursuit in the Northeast.
