The horse-drawn sleighs and the snowy setting set this lithograph apart from many winter scenes of its era. Joseph Hoover published it in Philadelphia around 1867, when color lithography had become a popular way to bring affordable scenes of American life into homes and shop windows. Sleighing was both a practical way to travel over snow and a favored winter pastime, and prints like this one captured that mix of work and leisure. Look closely at the horses and the sleighs for the small details that made such images appealing to viewers of the time.
