Ice skating appears here as a leisure pursuit for women as well as men, a detail that stands out among the winter scenes this board collects. The wood engraving ran in Harper's Weekly on January 25, 1868, on page 52, when the illustrated weekly was among the most widely read sources of pictures of American life. Engravings like this one were cut into blocks of boxwood and printed alongside news and fiction, so they reached readers who would never see the original scene. Skating was a popular winter amusement in the period, drawing crowds to frozen ponds and rinks in town and country alike.
