In Scene VI of Cassius M. Coolidge's ten-part series *The Tale of a Wedded Life*, titled "Evenings down Town," a man is shown at a bar, the saloon setting that marks the story's turn away from home. Multi-scene sequences like this were a popular format in American cartoons of the 1870s, using a sequence of images to tell a moral story about married life. Saloons were a frequent target of such satire, since critics of the period often blamed late nights of drinking away from home for strained marriages and neglected families. The record notes that this print reproduces a cartoon drawing signed "Kash," and its humor reflects the temperance-minded attitudes of the time.
