Roman galleys sit on the water in the background of this engraving, while an old man and several women occupy the foreground. It was published in London in 1661 as an illustration for *The Second Punick War between Hannibal and the Romanes*, a book about the conflict between Rome and Carthage from 218 to 201 BCE. Seventeenth-century English book illustrators often used classical scenes like this one to suggest moral lessons about courage, loss, and civic duty, so the picture works as commentary as well as historical illustration. The record does not spell out its specific allegorical meaning.
