A woman stands on a raised pedestal in this engraving, gripping a staff topped with a liberty cap while a shield rests nearby, the standard attributes of Liberty as an allegorical figure. The cap, a soft felt hat tracing back to the pileus given to freed slaves in ancient Rome, became a powerful emblem during the American and French revolutions. Engravings like this one, dated between 1787 and 1848, circulated widely in an era when such symbols helped people discuss independence, citizenship and political rights. The shield suggests that liberty was often pictured as something that had to be defended as well as celebrated.
