Onlookers crowd the street near Washington Place in this view of the aftermath of the Triangle Waist Company fire. The blaze broke out on March 25, 1911, in the upper floors of the Asch Building, and 146 workers died, most of them young immigrant women, many of whom jumped when exits and stairways failed. The disaster fueled public outrage over factory safety and helped drive new fire codes and labor inspection laws in New York. George Grantham Bain, whose collection holds this print, recorded many such street scenes as news of the fire spread.
