Fifth in a ten-scene comic sequence, this drawing, titled "Muscle," shows a married couple come to blows, a sharp turn in a series that follows a marriage from its beginning. Cassius M. Coolidge's *The Tale of a Wedded Life*, dated around 1877, belongs to the domestic humor that American cartoonists of the 1870s often used to comment on married life and social manners. The caption tracings point to saloons, which suggests the drinking and quarrels that temperance-minded writers of the period blamed for wrecked households. The reproduction preserves a drawing signed "Kash," though the record's details are unverified.
