The engraving shows the Life Guards, the British household cavalry, charging in the closing phase of the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. Their counterattack against French cavalry during the afternoon fighting is often cited as one of the moments that steadied the Allied line. Steel engraving was a common method for battle scenes in the 19th century, allowing fine detail and large circulation through illustrated books and magazines. The caption card gives no date for this print, so it likely reflects a later interpretation of the battle rather than an eyewitness view.
