A winter rescue device built for skaters who break through thin ice is the subject of this 1917 photograph, taken in New York by the Central News Photo Service. Ice accidents were a common hazard in the period, and rescuers often relied on simple equipment such as poles, ladders and ropes to reach people who had fallen through. The picture came out of the National Photo Company Collection, which documented everyday city life in the early twentieth century and shows how communities tried to prevent winter drownings.
