Drawn from the closing chapters of the Book of Revelation, this chromolithograph takes its title from a verse describing a tree of life growing on either side of a river and bearing twelve kinds of fruit. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that published it around 1892, sold large numbers of colored prints to American households, and biblical subjects like this one appealed to buyers who wanted devotional images for the parlor or family sitting room. Chromolithography built its color from a separate stone for each hue, so the process was slow and labor-intensive, yet it made affordable images with bright, even color that hand-tinted prints rarely matched.
