Among the many mining-camp scenes that Harper's Weekly printed in the 1850s, this wood engraving stands out for its focus on Chinese miners and the barbering trade that served them. It appeared in the October 3, 1857 issue, when Chinese men had come to California's gold fields in growing numbers since 1849 and often worked claims that Anglo miners had passed over. The record's subjects also point to the camp's daily routines, including work and shaving within the same settlement. Engravings like this one were made for a broad eastern readership, so they offer a view of how the period's press framed mining labor and the foreign workers within it.
