Two neighboring Broadway buildings, the Knickerbocker Trust Company at No. 60 and the Manhattan Life Insurance Building at No. 66, appear together in this 1912 or 1913 view of lower Manhattan's financial district. The Knickerbocker Trust became a symbol of the Panic of 1907, when a run on the bank helped set off a wider financial crisis. Irving Underhill, a New York photographer, made the picture and registered it for copyright, which is why it survives as a documented print. The street-level angle shows how densely these office towers crowded the financial district only a few years after the panic.
