Naval officer Charles Stewart, shown here as a commodore, is the subject of this portrait lithograph published in Philadelphia around 1841. A. Newsam drew the likeness from life, and P. S. Duval transferred it to stone for the firm Huddy & Duval. Stewart earned his reputation commanding the frigate *Constitution* during the War of 1812, and in 1815 he helped capture the British sloops *Cyane* and *Levant*, a victory that made him one of the best-known American sailors of his day. Portraits like this one circulated widely, letting admirers own a likeness of a public figure at a modest cost.
