This color lithograph gathers scenes from Martin Luther's life, including the German-language episodes of Luther nailing his theses to the church door and standing before the Diet of Worms. Published in New York in 1874 by H. Schile, it adapts an original by H. Brückner and was likely aimed at German-speaking households. The sheet also honors earlier reformers such as Jan Hus, John Wycliffe and Girolamo Savonarola, along with Philipp Melanchthon, Johannes Bugenhagen, and the Protestant warrior-kings Gustavus Adolphus and Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar, who fought in the Thirty Years' War. Its pairing of portraits and scenes shows how 19th-century Protestants framed the Reformation as a long line of principled dissent.
