Gracie Mansion, the Manhattan residence of New York's mayor, is the setting here, and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is shown at a press conference held there on July 30, 1964. That summer, New York was on edge after the Harlem disturbances earlier in July, which followed a police shooting and drew national attention to race relations in the city. The photograph is a staff image by Dick DeMarsico for the New York World-Telegram and the Sun, one of the many news pictures the paper produced during that period. Its newspaper origin shows in its direct, reportorial framing of reporters and officials around a public moment.
