This photograph catches two elder statesmen together in a parked car outside Bernard Baruch's New York home in April 1961, a few years after Winston Churchill had left office as British prime minister. The World-Telegram & Sun staff photographer Ed Ford made the picture, and it is a rare candid moment for two men whose public lives were mostly lived through formal portraits and official occasions. Baruch, a financier who advised several American presidents and chaired the War Industries Board in World War I, was a longtime friend of Churchill. The informal setting, with the men seated close and talking, shows the more personal side of a friendship that spanned decades.
